Liverpool’s dining scene keeps getting better, and Barnacle Restaurant and Bar proves that indulgence and integrity can exist in perfect harmony.
Nestled in the heart of the city’s picturesque Georgian Quarter, Barnacle is the latest venture from celebrated chef Paul Askew and his son Harry Askew. From the moment I arrived for the launch evening, I knew this was something special.

A Space Transformed
The transformation of the space is remarkable. Elegant and modern, yet full of original charm and whispers of history. Soft lighting, natural textures, and thoughtful details create a warmth that makes you want to pause, breathe, and truly savour the experience.
And for cosy autumn evenings, there’s a hidden room with an open fireplace that feels relaxing and laid back.

Perfect Balance
Barnacle strikes the perfect balance between luxury and ease. Whether it’s an intimate date night, a relaxed catch-up with friends, or a solo moment of calm with a table for one, the space is very inviting.
Dog lovers, you will be pleased to know that furry friends are welcome too, (with paws firmly on the floor). My dog Ocean will be thrilled!
A delightful extra is the floral corner, where guests can pick up seasonal blooms from the Flower Yard Liverpool. It’s such a thoughtful touch and really made me smile.

The Culinary Experience
And then there’s the food. Chef Askew and his team champion Merseyside’s finest local producers, creating seasonal menus that celebrate the region’s vibrant culinary scene.
I sampled a selection of chef’s snacks, canapés, and small plates. Each one was a little masterpiece… Tender ox cheek, fresh olives, warm focaccia dipped in olive oil, delicate fish and perfectly cooked steak. Every bite was a delight and even sparked memories of The Art School.
Showstopper Dessert
Dessert was a showstopper: a Guinness and chocolate cake served with Cashel Blue cheese, mascarpone, and orange. Rich, comforting, and yet perfectly balanced, it was indulgence done with finesse.
Signature Cocktails
For those who love a tipple, the signature cocktails do not disappoint. The “All Hands on Deck” is not for the faint-hearted, but it certainly warms the chest and lifts the spirit.
The Verdict
Barnacle definitely carries The Art School’s signature elegance into a more relaxed space where sophistication meets comfort.
It’s a celebration of everything you could want from a bar and restaurant in one of Liverpool’s most charming areas and is bound to become a firm favourite.
