Ma Boyle’s, Liverpool – Restaurant Review

3 Min Read

Welcome to Ma Boyle’s, one of my most cherished eateries in Liverpool and a place that truly feels like home. Tucked away just off Water Street, Ma Boyle’s is a hidden gem. Nestled beside the beautiful St Nick’s Church Gardens and only a stone’s throw from the Liver Building, it is perfectly placed yet somehow still feels like a secret.

I’ve been coming here for as long as I can remember, and every visit brings the same feeling. A little slice of London charm with a hint of Parisian café culture, right here in the heart of Liverpool. The venue is intimate, relaxed, timelessly beautiful and full of character, comfort and cosy vibes.

They are currently hosting jazz nights, and as both a jazz and food lover, this is my idea of heaven. There’s something very special about sitting down to a gorgeous meal while a live band plays just a few steps away.

Menu Highlights

Starters: The Halloumi Fries are always unbelievable — huge portions, perfectly cooked and coated in a slightly naughty batter. The Nachos are another winner, piled high with melted cheese and jalapeños.

Mains: The Vegan Patty Burger is a fantastic alternative to meat, served on a toasted brioche bun with homemade battered onion rings, chunky chips and salad. The steak is equally impressive, served with sautéed mushrooms and a rich peppercorn sauce.

Sunday Roasts: Ma Boyle’s legendary Sunday Roasts are widely regarded as one of Liverpool’s finest. The Roast Chicken, Nut Roast, Roast Beef and Pork Belly are all served with crispy roasties, a Yorkshire pudding, seasoned vegetables, herb stuffing and rich gravy. My personal favourite is the pork belly, crispy in all the right places.

Ma’s Blind Scouse Pie: A vegan Scouse topped with a golden puff pastry lid, served with seasonal vegetables and spring onion mash — the ultimate winter warmer.

Desserts: The warm Sticky Toffee Pudding with ice cream is melt-in-the-mouth perfection.

Drinks: The Espresso Martini with Baileys is one of the best I’ve ever had. Ma Boyle’s also offers brilliant mocktails.

The service is always exceptional — super-friendly, attentive and genuinely welcoming. The atmosphere is relaxed with chilled vibes, dog-friendly (great for bulldogs like my Ocean!), with plenty of outdoor seating and a gorgeous view of the church.
